I never got out of the car but I got a feel for the hundred odd miles of Mississippi I crossed that lay between Birmingham and Memphis. Passing Corinth I recalled stories of Grant's invasion following Shiloh, his penetration of the Deep South. The swamps became common closer to the river. That was my impression: green, dark and humid wildness.
Local Crawl Fish and black magic was high on the touristy trail here for our gang... Great dependence on the local waterways. Overnight stay so I can't offer too much
I stopped in Jackson and a few smaller MS towns during a four-state road trip of the Deep South. I was there in the summer, so it was uber-humid, and I was constantly assailed by gangs of large mosquitos (disclaimer: it probably wasn't the best time to take a hike around a swamp). As a vegetarian in the land of Deep Fried Meat, my choices food wise were usually pretty limited. Still, I liked the state more than I thought I would. There was typical Southern Hospitality, tons of charming cities, especially along the coast, and a fascinating history -- reflected in many well-maintained museums and monuments. I probably won't be moving there, but it was certainly worth a visit.
I didn't like Mississippi during the summer months at all. Too humid and stuffy. Always felt sick. The food was great though, like all Southern food. It shows though that Mississippi state is the poorest state in the Union.
